Since we wanted to reach the Congo Basin fastest possible, we went in Namibia without any  detours straight north and crossed the border into Angola east of Ruacana. Border clearance was easy but took long, as the computers just crashed.

From here onwards traffic was on the right.

Where refuelling is still fun

After some 140 kilometres of a long bush track we reached the tar road to Lubango, which was cluttered with potholes. There we filled up with 100 litres of diesel for just 22 Euros - that's how refuelling is fun!

The spectacular Serra da Leba Pass

West of Lubango we went down the spectacular Serra da Leba Pass towards the Atlantic. Here the cold Benguela Current moves along the coast to the north and covers the coastal strip in fog or high fog for over 1,000 kilometres. Unfortunately, this had a corresponding impact on the brilliance of our pictures.

We drove through the almost deserted province of Namibe, which is truly similar to the endless landscapes of southern Namibia, but alas without any wildlife to be seen.

Further north in the metropolitan area of Benguela it became quite busy. We stopped in the capital Luanda (finally with some sun, even if only for a few hours) to meet up with Andrew and his family again. Only thanks to him, we were able to go on our 2016/2017 Central- & West Africa tour as planned, since he had sent us the invitation letter for Angola, which was still absolutely necessary at that time - brilliant, as he had not known us personally beforehand! Among other things, we share the passion for travelling through Africa and therefore always have endless topics to talk about.

Short-term route change

We continued to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on a good tar road with potholes only now and then. Initially we had planned to drive to Brazzaville via Cabinda and Pointe-Noire, but then decided spontaneously to take the more direct route, approx. 500 kilometres shorter. We had already taken this washed-out bush road seven years before. However, apparently no bulldozer had been used on that piste since then. It now took us a full eight hours travel time to cover the 75 kilometres from the ferry across the Congo River to just behind the DRC/RC border - but more on that in the next update.

Da wir möglichst rasch das Kongobecken erreichen wollten, fuhren wir in Namibia ohne Umwege gen Norden und überquerten östlich von Ruacana die Grenze nach Angola. Die Grenzabfertigung war unkompliziert, dauerte aber lange, da die Computer abgestützt waren.

Ab hier galt Rechtsverkehr.

Wo Tanken noch Spaß macht

Nach einer guten 140 Kilometer langen Buschpiste erreichten wir die mit Schlaglöchern übersäte Teerstraße nach Lubango. Dort tankten wir 100 Liter Diesel für nur 22 Euro - so macht Tanken Spaß!

Der spektakuläre Serra da Leba Pass

Westlich von Lubango ging es den spektakulären Serra da Leba Pass bergab Richtung Atlantik. Hier zieht der kalte Benguelastrom an der Küste entlang gen Norden und hüllt den Küstenstreifen über 1.000 Kilometer in Nebel bzw. Hochnebel. Das hat leider entsprechende Auswirkungen auf die Brillanz unserer Fotos.

Wir fuhren durch die fast menschenleere Provinz Namibe, die tatsächlich viel Ähnlichkeit mit den endlosen Landschaften im Süden Namibias aufweist, jedoch bedauerlicherweise ohne Wildtiere zu sehen.

Sonne und Freunde in Luanda

Ab der Metropole Benguela wurde es hektisch. In der Hauptstadt Luanda (hier endlich Sonne, wenn auch nur für ein paar Stunden) machten wir Halt, um uns wieder mit Andrew und seiner Familie zu treffen. Dank ihm konnten wir unsere damalige Zentral- & Westafrika-Tour 2016/2017 überhaupt wie geplant fahren, denn er hatte uns das damals noch zwingend erforderliche Einladungsschreiben für Angola geschickt - genial, denn er hatte uns zuvor gar nicht persönlich gekannt! Wir teilen u.a. die Leidenschaft fürs Reisen durch Afrika und haben somit immer endlosen Gesprächsstoff.

Kurzfristige Streckenänderung

Weiter ging es an die Grenze zur Demokratischen Republik Kongo (DRC) auf guter Teerstraße mit relativ wenigen Schlaglöchern. Ursprünglich hatten wir vor, über Cabinda und Pointe-Noire nach Brazzaville zu fahren, entschieden uns dann jedoch kurzfristig für die direktere, ca. 500 Kilometer kürzere Strecke. Diese ausgewaschene Buschpiste waren wir sieben Jahre zuvor schon gefahren. Jedoch war seitdem dort offensichtlich keine Planierraupe mehr im Einsatz. Für die 75 Kilometer ab der Fähre über den Kongo bis kurz hinter die DRC/RC Grenze brauchten wir ganze acht Stunden Fahrzeit - aber dazu mehr im nächsten Update.
