„Felice Anno Nuovo!“ Nice, but not surprising are those greetings for New Year in Italy. Nice, but irritating are they however in Kenya. First we guess that we are mishearing. Yet there is no doubt. Beside Swahili people in the region around Malindi an the Kenyan seaside are speaking not mainly English, but... Italian. Obvious reason: The area is a popular holiday destination for Flavio Briatore and many others of his fellow countrymen.

Good for us, since in „little Italy in Kenya“ we can restock pastas, enjoy oven-fresh pizza and homemade ice cream. The other advantage of Malindi (and - to be honest - the last one we can see here) is: it takes us only 15 minutes by plane to go to Lamu Archipel where we spend a few magnificent days.

Interesting flower: it is in blossom just for one night, yet on the next day it loses its bloom.

Neujahrsgrüße auf Italienisch

"Felice Anno Nuovo!" Schön, aber nicht überraschend sind diese Grüße zum Neuen Jahr in Italien. Schön, allerdings völlig irritierend ist hingegen, dass uns am 1. Januar Kinder auf der Straße in Kenia so begrüßen. Zuerst glauben wir, uns zu verhören. Doch es besteht kein Zweifel. In der Region um Malindi an der kenianischen Küste sprechen die Menschen neben Swahili nicht vorwiegend Englisch, sondern.... Italienisch. Naheliegender Grund: Die Gegend ist beliebtes Urlaubsziel von Flavio Briatore und vielen anderen seiner Landsleute. 

Gut für uns, denn so können wir in "Little Italy in Kenya" unsere Vorräte an Pasta wieder auffüllen, ofenfrische Pizzen genießen und hausgemachte italienische Eiscreme schlemmen. Weiterer Vorteil von Malindi (und ehrlich gesagt auch der letzte, denn mehr Vorzüge können wir an dem Ort nicht entdecken) ist, dass wir mit einem kleinen Flieger in nur 15 Minuten auf dem Lamu Archipel sind. Dort verbringen wir einige wundervolle Tage.
