Our first stopp was Great Zimbabwe in the south of the country. At its peak between the 11. and 15. century the complex had up to 18,000 inhabitants. Its walls are made of granite blocks and do not include any mortar. Who was responsible for its architecture? This was a great mystery for a long time. Today it is generally accepted that it have been the Shona. The impressive ruins are the biggest pre-colonial building made of stone in Africa south of the Sahara.
Unser erstes Ziel in Simbabwe war Great Zimbabwe im Süden des Landes. Diese Ruinenstadt hatte in ihrer Blütephase vom 11. bis 15. Jahrhundert bis zu 18.000 Einwohner. Ihre Mauern sind aus Granitblöcken und ohne Mörtel gebaut. Lange galt Great Zimbabwe als ungelöstes archäologisches Rätsel. Inzwischen geht man davon aus, dass die Shona für die Architektur verantwortlich waren. Die beeindruckende Anlage ist der größte vorkoloniale Steinbau in Afrika südlich der Sahara.
