Fitz Roy, this name sounds like a wild musician, a famous actor, extreme sportsman, daring adventurer, right? It actually has to do with all of it, somehow. But it is not what you presume. Fitz Roy is a fabulous giant - a 3,406-meter high granite mountain in the north of the Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. It is named in honour of Robert FitzRoy, captain of the HMS Beagle which carried Charles Darwin as a ship's naturalist around the world for five years in the 1830s.

Challenge for summiteers

The area is a popular destination for hikers and climbers. Fitz Roy, on the other hand, is such a spectacular challenge that only the most experienced mountaineers dare to climb the mountain, and even they depend on favourable weather conditions. It is no coincidence that the Danish researcher and writer Andreas Madsen, in 1903 one of the first settlers in the little mountain village of El Chaltén on the edge of the massif, wrote: "Fitz Roy is the mountain that God placed on earth to break man's pride".

Don't worry. We are not climbers, we are still untrained, and I still don't feel great. That is why here too we just go for a hike. It is pretty windy, which we already know from the Torres del Paine National Park south of here in the Chilean part of Patagonia.

Giant in spectacular light

Here even in summer it is also often cold, rainy and the mountain is covered with clouds. In this respect we are lucky with the weather. Yet are we lucky enough to even take one of the rare pictures of the Fitz Roy at sunrise? We just give it a try and stay as the only ones on a gravel parking lot with a view to El Chaltén and the mountain massif behind. In the night two cars pass by. The second driver while leaving the lot speeds up insomuch that gravel stones crash into our camper. Jackass!

At 3.30 am the alarm clock rings. Excitedly we look out of the window: It is slowly getting bright with just a few clouds in the sky. Martin takes out the big camera and walks out. I rather stay in the warm camper and use the elevated position of our roof-light. We wait. And wait. Then the time has come. The rising sun behind us changes the colours of Fitz Roy slowly into magical pinkish-orange ones. Simply amazing. What a natural spectacle. Thank you Fitz Roy!

Danke Fitz Roy!

Fitz Roy, das klingt nach wildem Musiker, berühmtem Schauspieler, Extremsportler, wagemutigem Abenteurer, oder? Er hat tatsächlich mit all dem zu tun, irgendwie. Doch er ist nicht das, was ihr jetzt vermutet. Fitz Roy ist ein sagenhafter Gigant - nämlich ein 3.406 Meter hoher Granitberg im Norden des Nationalparks Los Glaciares in Argentinien. Benannt wurde er nach dem Kapitän Robert FitzRoy des Forschungsschiffes HMS Beagle, mit dem Charles Darwin 1831 für fast fünf Jahre um die Welt reiste.

Herausforderung für Gipfelstürmer

Die Region ist eine beliebte Destination für Wanderer und Gipfelstürmer. Fitz Roy selbst hingegen ist eine derart spektakuläre Herausforderung, dass nur äußerst geübte Kletterer überhaupt wagen, ihn zu besteigen, und auch dann auf günstige Wetterbedingungen angewiesen sind. Nicht von ungefähr schrieb der dänische Schriftsteller Andreas Madsen, der sich als einer der ersten Siedler 1903 im kleinen Bergdorf El Chaltén am Rande des Massivs niederließ: "Der Fitz Roy ist jener Berg, den Gott auf die Erde stellte, um den Stolz der Menschen zu brechen."

Keine Sorge. Wir sind keine Kletterer, zudem noch immer untrainiert, und ich bin weiterhin leicht angeschlagen. So machen wir auch hier nur eine Wanderung. Windig bis stürmisch ist es. Das kennen wir schon aus der Gegend um den Torres del Paine, weiter südlich im chilenischen Teil Patagoniens gelegen.

Hier ist es zudem selbst im Sommer oft kalt, regnet und der Berg ist häufig wolkenverhangen. Diesbezüglich haben wir Glück mit dem Wetter. Ob es jedoch soweit reicht, dass wir sogar eine der seltenen Aufnahmen vom Fitz Roy bei Sonnenaufgang machen können? Wir versuchen es einfach und übernachten als einzige auf einem Schotterparkplatz mit Blick auf El Chaltén und das dahinterliegende Bergmassiv. Nachts kommt zweimal ein Auto vorbei. Der zweite Fahrer hat besonderen Spaß daran, beim Abfahren so stark zu beschleunigen, dass Schottersteine gegen unser Auto knallen. Dotterkopf, doofer!

Um 3.30 Uhr klingelt der Wecker. Gespannt blicken wir aus dem Fenster: Es wird langsam hell, nur wenige Wolken sind am Himmel. Martin nimmt sich die große Kamera und geht schon mal nach draußen. Ich nutze den erhöhten Ausblick von unserem Dachfenster. Wir warten. Und warten. Dann passiert es. Der Fitz Roy wechselt langsam wie magisch seine Farben. Die hinter uns aufgehende Sonne taucht ihn in ein beinah unwirkliches rosa-orangefarbenes Licht. Traumhaft schön. Was für ein Naturschauspiel. Danke Fitz Roy!
