30 Fascinating Facts About Antarctica (Antarctica 1/3) / 30 faszinierende Fakten über die Antarktis (Antarktis 1/3)

Antarctica is a continent of superlatives:

  1. The windiest continent - winds can reach up to 200 miles per hour.
  2. The coldest continent - with an annual average temperature of -55 degrees Celsius and the lowest temperature at ground level ever recorded on our planet of -98.6 (!) degrees Celsius (s. "New record temperature in the Antarctic: almost -100 degrees")
  3. The driest continent - there are even some places with less rain than in the Atacama Desert,
    thus Antarctica is also
  4. The largest desert of our planet
  5. The highest continent - with an average elevation of around 2,500 meters. Without the layer of ice, however, it would be the flattest continent.
  6. More than 98 percent of Antarctica consists of a thick continental ice sheet.
  7. The ice sheet is on average 2,200 meters and in places up to 4,500 meters thick.
  8. The Antarctic ice sheet contains about 80 (!) percent of all the fresh water on earth.
  9. There are also some oases in Antarctica. These are areas free of ice or glaciers due to special natural conditions. However, palm trees do not grow here😉, only mosses and lichens.
  10. There are no trees or shrubs in Antarctica.

  11. The South Pole is located on the Antarctic continent at an altitude of 2,835 meters above sea level - and 3,914 kilometers away from Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world.
  12. The highest point of Antarctica is Mount Vinson at 4,892 meters.
  13. Hidden lakes: More than 370 subglacial lakes full of microscopic life are lurking under Antarctica's ice.
  14. Volcanic area: With 138 so far known volcanoes, some of them even active, Antarctica is one of the largest volcanic areas on earth.
  15. Antarctica was discovered in 1820 as the last of the seven continents. ("Why seven? Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and America are only five?" If you ask this question, having the 'five continent theory' in mind, you should rethink. Today, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia/Oceania, North America, South America and Antarctica are regarded as seven independent continents.
  16. With an area of 14 million square kilometers, Antarctica is the fifth largest continent - larger than Europe and than Australia/Oceania.
  17. Antarctica is the realm of penguins, seals and migrating birds, mainly animals that can swim or fly. Mammals can only be found in the water. But actually only the coastal strip of the Antarctic is inhabited by animals. No creature can exist permanently in the pure ice desert in the middle of the continent.
  18. Yet there is one bird being the only species that hatches in Antarctica during the hostile winter: the Emperor Penguin ("March of the Penguins" ("La Marche de l'empereur" - a touching French documentary about the arduous life of emperor penguins in Antarctica - highly recommended)
  19. Why do polar bears never meet penguins? Quite simple: They live at opposite ends of the world. Polar bears inhabit the Arctic, near the North Pole, while penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere, mainly near the South Pole.
  20. Antarctic or Antarctica? Strictly speaking, Antarctic is a term for the entire Southern Polar region while Antarctica specifically refers to the continent. However, the general usage does not make a difference - neither do I.

  21. Antarctica is not a country or nation of its own. It therefore has neither a government nor an own currency.
  22. Antarctic Treaty: an agreement signed by twelve nations in 1959. The treaty sets aside Antarctic - defined as all of the land and ice shelves south of 60 degrees latitude - as a scientific preserve, bans military activity on the continent and prohibits all activities relating to mineral resources. The treaty currently has 53 parties and will be open for review in 2048.
  23. Antarctica is the only continent without an indigenous population.
  24. The residents of Antarctica are mainly scientists and just temporarily on the continent. There are about 4,000 people through the summer months and around 1,000 overwinter each year. Most of them work in about 80 research stations currently maintained by 29 Antarctic Parties on the White Continent.
  25. The biggest danger to humans in research stations, aside from the cold? You won't believe it, but it is: fire. Due to the very dry conditions fire is extremely dangerous, as it it almost impossible to extinguish the fire.
  26. Surprise continent: Only recently, researchers have discovered in Antarctica mega-colonies of Adélie penguins with a total of over 1.5 million animals (National Geographic: "Hidden Penguin Mega-Colonies Discovered in Antarctica").
  27. Is Antarctica losing or gaining ice? Both. How does that work? There are two types of ice in Antarctica, sea ice and land ice, and they develop differently. The sea ice expands slightly. It grows extensively during winter but nearly completely melts away during the summer with hardly no effect on sea levels. The more important land ice, on the other hand, the ice which has accumulated over thousands of years on the Antarctica landmass through snowfall, is decreasing at an accelerating rate. When land ice melts and flows into the oceans global sea levels rise on average (s. also Skepticalscience "Is Antarctica losing or gaining ice?").
  28. Antarctica formerly close to the equator: More than 170 million years ago, Antarctica's land area was part of the Gondwana land mass and was close to the equator.
  29. Own .AQ domain: Although Antarctica is not a country, it still has its own country-specific domain. .AQ is reserved for organizations that work on the icy continent.
  30. AKA: Antarctica is also refered to as the white/icy/eternal/mystery continent, the land of extremes or the desert of ice.

30 faszinierende Fakten über die Antarktis

Die Antarktis ist ein Kontinent der Superlative:
